Legend says that this temple was opened by En no Ozuno in 648, and became one of the Rokugo Manzan Temples when Ninmon opened the Rokugo Manzan in the Yoro Period (717 - 723). The enshrined principal deity is Monju Bunshatsu who grants wisdom, and many worshipers visit to pray for success, etc. The Hibutsu is enshrined in the Inhondo that can be reached by climbing a long stone stairway, and the so-called "wisdom water" flows from the Shishikutsu located behind the main hall. Besides this, there is a vast treasure tower, a zelkova tree with a diameter reaching around 7 meters, a bell tower that is a prefecture-designated cultural property, and others. From the precincts, you can see the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. Also, it has been designated as a national scenic spot along with the nearby Monju Yaba.
